Nigerian National Currency

Nigeria’s unique currency, the Naira symbolized a transition from European influence to one uniquely Nigerian. As the official currency of Nigeria, this monetary unit was introduced in 1971, twelve years after independence. In fact, Nigeria was the last of the African nations to remove the currency £sd introduced by the British Empire.The evolution of the Naira (₦) is a testament to the economic and social growth of Nigeria. In 1977, a historically significant note was introduced. The 20 ₦ was issued with the image of the first Nigerian of major significance.
